There are eight shrines distributed across the settled planets, each dedicated to one of the eight elemental modes that CER0s can manipulate and the concept of the Ascendant.
The shrines serve as both cultural landmarks and spiritual centers, with their mysterious origins adding to their significance. While their construction within the past 300 years is documented, the identity of their builders and their true purpose remain unknown. They are only accessible to CER0 wielders. Some shrines have placement in locations that wouldn't normally be accessible.
Each shrine contains a trial that CER0 wielders must complete to demonstrate their mastery over that specific elemental mode. The trials are designed to test both skill and understanding of the element's fundamental nature. For example, the Ascendant Roar Shrine's trial uses Vesta's Winds of the Dawn to rapidly changing terrain while the Ascendant Bonds Shrine's trial involves powering techology using the energy from Vulcan's Nuclear Wells.
These trials serve as both practical tests of ability and spiritual journeys, requiring wielders to demonstrate not just technical proficiency but also a deeper connection with their chosen element. The remote and challenging locations of the shrines add an additional layer of difficulty to completing these trials.
Why such elaborate structures were built to honor a theoretical concept has puzzled researchers and observers. Some view it as evidence of the profound cultural impact the Ascendant theory has had on society, while others have attempted to use the shrines' existence to legitimize claims of the Ascendant’s existence. Despite various interpretations, the true purpose behind their construction remains one of the settled worlds' unsolved mysteries.
The locations for each shrine were chosen not just for their geographical significance, but for their natural resonance with the specific elemental mode they represent.
